Officials for Cricket South Africa have been forced to defend their choice of proposed team uniform for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, stating the apparently large number of zips contained within the design offer “no advantage” to their bowlers.
With the recent conviction of South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, for an incident in which he appeared to use the zip of his trousers to tamper with the ball, the selection of these garments comes at an unfortunate time.
“We see nothing out of the ordinary here” said an spokesperson for the national team. “With cricket perceived as often ‘a bit stuffy or behind the times’ we felt a more daring design would appeal to our younger fans.
Sri Lanka and the ICC are yet to comment.
